Asthma Attacks - What Not to Do

Asthma frequency in the population

About 3% of people in the Western world are asthma sufferers. People from Africa and from amongst the Canadian Indians seem to rarely suffer from it. People of all ages can be asthma sufferers with slightly more of them living in cities than rural areas. Asthma amongst children is a widespread problem and for about 30% of them it will have started before the age of 10, when twice as many boys than girls become asthmatic.

What happens during an asthma attack

With some people asthma is being slightly wheezy from time time, but in others it can come as repeated spasmodic attacks of breathlessness and wheezing. These attacks are unpleasant: your chest feels tight and you often get dry cough. Inside your lungs the bronchial tubes become tighter and the inner lining swells up to partly block the airway. What also happens is that extra mucus is produced in the bronchial tubes further impeding the air flow. The good news is that if treated promptly with medication or breathing exercises things will soon return to normal and no lasting damage is done.

Avoid prolonged asthma attacks

The main point here is not to let the asthma attack go on because it will just get worse and worse. Your breathing muscles will have to work very hard and get tired made more acute by the low levels of oxygen in the bloodstream. After a considerable time, should you let an asthma attack continue untreated, the mucus in your lungs becomes dry and hard thanks to all the mouth breathing that has been going on and you probably won't be drinking enough liquids. At this stage of an asthma attack, things have become serious needing hospital admission and artificial assistance to get air into your lungs.

Of course, an asthma attack should never be allowed to get so serious and the golden rule is to start treating an attack as soon as possible after it starts. If there isn't any improvement after taking your regular medication then call a doctor before the symptoms get worse.
